The Challenge
Making a mix of old and new furniture styles feel intentional.
The client had a 1,000 sq ft Don Mills condo full of pieces she wasn't ready to part with — a traditional dining set, green marble tile in the sunroom, furniture accumulated over years. She wanted the apartment to feel current and cohesive, without gutting it. No major structural work. No electrical changes beyond what condo rules allow. No blank-slate budget.
The real constraint: making a mix of old and new furniture styles feel intentional rather than accidental — and doing it through a sunroom that was functioning as a light-blocking wall between the dining area and the rest of the apartment.
Our Approach
The style direction came first. Mid-century modern gave us a vocabulary that could absorb the traditional dining set and the green marble without either piece reading as an outlier. Once that was established, every decision followed from it.
The sunroom partition was the structural move that unlocked the layout. Custom reeded glass replaced the existing wall — keeping zones defined while letting light reach the dining area. The green marble tile was mirrored with a custom side table in the same material, making it a deliberate design element instead of an inherited problem.
Flooring, bedroom, and office were each scoped to condo board restrictions: carpet out, engineered wood in, a built-in desk with integrated cable management that required no permit, and a teal accent wall with paneling that transformed the bedroom without touching a ceiling or structural wall.
